Black Coat
Here comes another one into town.  Riding in on his black horse with a frown.  The neighbors scream when he's around.  There's not a forgiving soul left in this town.
You've got a whole lot of love.  Is it ever enough?  You've got to learn to forgive.  It's incredible stuff.  You've got to learn not to fight.  You've got to kiss and make up. You've got a whole lot of love.
They drove the last one out, he wasn't the first.  Left with no backbone for his shirt.  And in the basement of the church, four hundred ninety marks left in the dirt.
They said "you're wrong", and so it goes.
I said "I'm right", but we don't need to fight.

Concert Tower
The lights are down and the spotlights shine.  There's a sparkle in each eye.  Like drops of rain in a desert sky. They watch a man sing about his life.  But not you, cause you're not everyone.
We tried before, such a long, long time ago.  We lost our heads, but we never had control.  Fall down tower in my mind, you're old.
Our eyes they shine, there's a purpose twice as bright.
For all I know, I think everyone is right.  A picture each one's painted starts out white
Brick by brick the building falls.  Hand by hand we join the world.  Line by line the edges dull.
It only takes a moment.  So rest your head for a little while.  We can be great and we know it, the greatest people alive.  Lay down your life.

In Good Time
Hold on.  Time gives way.  Hold on.  Walk with grace.
Hold on.  Your time will come.  Walk with grace.  For your wave will rise someday.
"I'm no good."  I heard you say. You've got to put something in this empty space.  When you walk by next, you're gonna stumble less.
I waited, and my time came, like it should.  But the way back down hurt me good.  Each time you fall short of good, stand and admire those who could.  Then, when you lose your feet, there's more of you beneath.  It makes it easier.
Sore losers never win, but a smile in failure is the best man's friend.
     Hold on, walk with grace.

Blue-sky-chasers
There's something on the streetlight.  I'm chasing after blue skies.  I never want to see a cloudy day.  And so I move each day I rise.
I've never seen a blind man run.  I don't realize what I'm running through or from.  And every time a raindrop hits my eyes.  I think about the ground I'm on.
I'm blue sky chasing tonight.  Take me by the hand.  I see my feet again.  I'm walking by the streetlight.
I've wasted such a silent, holy night.  I feel the longing of my darkest days there every time I close my eyes.
I'm blue sky chasing tonight.  Take me by the hand.  I see my feet again.  I'm walking by the streetlight.

A Good Thing
She's talking about all the ways that she sleeps.  With the light in the hall on and the socks on her feet.  She's got things on her walls that her friends never see.  That's all right.
Cause the more I know about you, the more I think I'm not alone.  The more I know about you, well the stranger you become.  And that's a good thing
He's taking a ride out it's a night on the town.  And he's singing along fine but his window's not down.  Cause the music he likes is embarrassing loud.  That's all right.
Cause the more I know about you, the more I think I'm not alone.  The more I know about you, well the stranger you become.  And that's a good thing.

The Simplest Things
There's something you're missing.  Know it all.  You're never listening long enough.  Time makes it better. The roots go deep with time.  But who sends the rain when the dirt is getting dry?
Younger is easy, then trust gets old.  As we get older, how much truth do we really know?  Sometimes when I'm reading, I think I know things well.  But I do much better when the words unwrap themselves.
The greatest things to know are better off made known.
Walking is easy once you learn how.  But it's nice to be carried by a higher power.  Either way you might get there.
Both seem just as good.  But one way you'll see things like you never knew you could.
The greatest things to know are better off made known.
The timing is perfect.  Ready when You are.  I don't deserve this, though I've tried so hard.  So I make my best guesses, knowing all along, You'll show me the simplest things like peace and joy and love.

A Little Bit of Burnout
Drop it in the glass it hits the bottom.  Soon the stones are falling on themselves.  Tip it back to drink cause you've forgotten.  Mouth full of gravel.
Cause your working your way up to a burnout.  Something you can only decline later
Sometimes something small can make us stumble.
Sometimes something small is all it takes.  Enough of something small and it becomes full, and then it breaks.
Drop it in the glass it hits the bottom.  Make sure that it's gone before you drink.  Your glass is not the same cause you are not them.  Not gonna sink.

So long Fare-Girl
Goodbye baby, don't bother to write. Cause the postman's my friend, and he knows I don't like you anymore.  Goodbye sweetheart and sweet dreams tonight. Cause today is the first of the rest of your life.
I was strong just for you, cried when you told me to.  Never had any emotional point of view.  Don't say a word as my heart speaks its mind.
No sense baby in looking back and laughing.  I'm sure that we did, but this is the worst thing that's happened to me.  No I'm sorry, I guess I was wrong.  Cause the person who left you is already gone.
I was strong for you, laughed when you told me to.  Never had any emotional point of view.
Don't say a word as my heart speaks its mind.
Good luck baby, I don't think you'll need it.  You're lucky I stayed here until you believed it.  First kiss tickets and sentiment stuff is the first thing I'll let go when I fall in love.

Open House

Everyday blows by just like a summer's breeze.  Habits form in time as time moves on.  We forget these things in making memories.  We'll remember them when they are gone.  All the ordinary simple things we shared.  Tell me why we never see it when it's there.
You know I'm no good at leaving.  I'm no good at goodbyes.  It's so hard for just my one heart to live two separate lives.
You ask me to promise something sure to you.  Be there in the end no matter how. If I make that promise, what good would it do, if you can't see what we have right now?  All the ordinary simple things we shared.  Tell me why we never see it when it's there.
You know I'm no good at leaving.  I'm no good at goodbyes.  It's so hard for just my one heart to live two separate lives.

The Road at Night
I waited till the road was clear.  Packed up some things and headed out of here.  I'm not the kind not to socialize, but on this open road I'm gonna make a lot better time.  And you asleep at home. That's where I'm going on this road.
I'm driving on this tunnel-bridge. It joins the sunset with the day that follows it.  The silhouette of the day's details becomes the background for the moon and all the stars on its coattails.  And you asleep at home.  That’s where I'm going on this road.
Driving faster, rearview mirror, watch the headlights come. Red and yellow on your pillow. Here it comes the rising of the sun, on you asleep at home. That's where I’m going on this road.

Watershed
In a small way, I questioned what I'd done.  In a strange way, it seemed it wasn't right.  In a good way, I'm glad I came along.  In the worst way I miss those days tonight.
There's so much about you that I still don't know.  Most of my life without you, should we be this close?
There is a reason that I came along. There is a reason that I wrote this song. It's so easy to see now.  My assumptions are gone.  I'm so happy to be proved wrong.
For a long time, I thought it couldn't happen.  For the last time, I thought that this was true.  At the right time, I saw you were why I was laughing.  I want to take this time to say my thanks to you.
Cause as the music started playing, we couldn't help but grin.  And as we drove around in circles, we'd always come around again.  And you just can't have too much of her, and there was just enough of him.  Sometimes we sit and stare, sometimes we just can't keep it in.
Out with your money and your car keys, you're going for a swim.  I'm gonna sit back on the shoreline, watch the water for a fin.  We're like a bunch of out of towners in a city they call sin.  I'm not the same, but where did I begin?
